Metal Sales & Service Inc. was founded 1968 by Jean and Betty Scharr. The firm's initial focus was the sale and distribution of non-ferrous metals and formed metal products to commercial contractors, machine shops and industrial fabricators. Its primary market areas included the states of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and New York. The company also engaged in the design, sale and distribution of preformed metal roof and wall systems to industrial/non-residential construction firms.
The business was quickly growing: in the early 1970's, the company moved its operation to a larger 12,000 square foot warehouse in Wilmington, DE to accommodate new fabrication machinery. The company added sheet metal fabrication equipment and welding to service the growing architectural metal needs of the construction community. Primary products included roof edging, cornices, wall coping, fascia systems and custom metal panel applications.
In 1978, customer demand prompted the Scharrs
to move the Metal Sales & Service headquarters to its
current office/warehouse location in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
In the early 1980's, the construction industry fueled a growing
demand for custom ornamental metalwork. Already an industry
leader in this field, Metal Sales & Service began making
strategic growth decisions to become an unparalleled provider
of custom metalwork. A second generation of Scharrs began
joined the business as sons, Stephen, Peter and Paul came
on board in the early 1980's.
A Continuous Line of Successful Product Development
To best serve industry demand, Metal Sales & Service
developed a specific division devoted to stainless steel and aluminum column covers and ornamental metal enclosures: the MetalWërks®
product line was launched in 1986. A
growing demand for custom sized durable metal panels brought
the quick addition of aluminum plate wall panels to the new
product line.
Most recently, MetalWërks® has launched the ArcWall systems of preformed wall panels. The ArcWall line fulfills the most complete line of interior and exterior metal cladding components with wet and dry seal systems in aluminum and stainless offerings.
